One of my tallest sculptures here is “The Scandium Tower” (also known in the mill as the “Hangup Roll”). Its function was to separate the rocks in the massive piles of sugarcane collected from the field machines. Once transferred into the mill, the rocks would then fall into a water-filled area known as the "sink flow", while the separated sugar would continue through its final processes.
The Scandium Tower is based on a sketch created by “Briggs Machines & Fabrication” in the late 1800s. Built in Spokane Valley, Washington, and then sold to HC&S by Doug Sheehan of McGuire Baring Co. It is now the center piece in the Sewell Archives.
